 Step 1: Secure Your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies)

Without a CAS number from your university, you cannot apply for a UK student Visa. The CAS will be issued by your university once you have paid your tuition deposit and received your unconditional offer letter. The details of your course, including the start date, and the information that UKVI needs to verify your enrollment, are all included in the CAS. Step 2: Complete Your English Language Requirement

Most UK universities accept IELTS for UKVI (Academic) with a minimum overall score of 6.0–6.5.  However, many universities will waive this requirement if you have strong WAEC or NECO English results (minimum grade B3 or credit).  Always confirm the English requirement with your specific university before booking an IELTS test, as Edge Concept clients have saved a huge amount of money by claiming this waiver.

 Step 3: Prepare Your financial Evidence

Among Nigerian applicants, financial documentation is the single most common reason for visa refusal. You are required to provide bank statements for 28 consecutive days that cover up to nine months and either £1,171 per month outside of London or £1,529 per month in London. Funds must be genuine, consistent, and held in your name or a parent’s account.  Bank statements with sudden large deposits within the 28-day window are a red flag for visa officers.

 Step 4: Book Your Tuberculosis (TB) Test

Nigeria is on the UK’s list of countries requiring a TB test before a student visa is granted.  You must visit an IOM-approved clinic in Lagos, Abuja, or Port Harcourt.  The test is typically valid for six months.  This should be booked early; popular clinics have waiting lists, and delays can push back your entire visa application timeline.

 Step 5: Submit Your Biometrics and Online UKVI Application

All applications are completed online via gov.uk. You will need your passport, CAS number, TB certificate, financial documents, and evidence of English proficiency. Pay the visa fee of £558, as well as the Immigration Health Surcharge of £776 per year. You will then be given an appointment to submit biometrics at a Visa Application Centre in Lagos or Abuja.  Standard processing takes approximately three weeks.  Under the 2025 eVisa system, most Nigerian applicants receive a digital visa managed through a UKVI online account.

 Common Errors That Cause Refusal. 

There are several reasons why a student may experience rejected applications, some of which include a weak or vague Statement of Purpose (SOP) that does not explain why you want to study a specific course at this specific university.  Statements of finances reveal sudden large deposits. Inconsistencies between documents.  Using applications that are copied or from a template, and not mentioning your ties to Nigeria as a reason why you will return.
