UK University Deposit; When to pay as an International Student

UK Universities initial deposit

You have your offer letter. You’re excited, your family is excited, and then you read the line that says a tuition fee deposit is due before your CAS can be issued. How much is it? Is it refundable? And is it better to pay now or wait?

Getting the timing wrong is a common (and costly) mistake international applicants make, including UK Universities initial deposit fee.

However, paying too late can cause you to miss the deposit deadline and your place.

Pay early, without checking the refund terms, and you could lock money into a course you aren’t sure about.

This guide explains when to pay your deposit, what several popular UK universities currently ask for, including the University of Hertfordshire, ULaw (The University of Law) and the University of Huddersfield, and how to avoid the traps.

What is a tuition fee deposit?

A tuition fee deposit (some universities call it an advance payment, acceptance payment or pre-CAS payment) is a portion of your first-year tuition that you pay before the university releases your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). You need the CAS to apply for a Student visa.

In most cases the deposit is not an extra cost. It is credited against your tuition, so you pay less later. The catch is that all or part of it can be non-refundable if you don’t end up enrolling, which is why timing and reading the terms matter.

So, when should you pay?

The honest answer is: as soon as five things are true.

  1. You have an offer you genuinely intend to accept. Compare your options first, and see our guide to high-value UK courses for 2026 if you are still choosing. Paying is a commitment, not a placeholder.
  2. You’ve read the refund terms. Know exactly what is returned if your visa is refused or you change your mind.
  3. Your funds are ready. The deposit is only part of the bill. You will also need tuition balances and living costs, and your financial documents must meet the Home Office rules (check the current requirements on GOV.UK).
  4. The timeline works. Your CAS follows your deposit, your visa follows your CAS, and all of it has to finish before your course starts. Students can generally apply for the visa up to six months before the start date on the CAS, so there is no benefit in leaving everything to the last month. Our step-by-step guide to securing a UK student visa shows what comes next, and GOV.UK lists the documents you must provide.
  5. You are inside the deadline. Every university sets a latest deposit date per intake. Miss it and your offer may be moved to the next intake.

There is also a sixth, bonus reason to pay early: discounts and scholarships can be tied to deposit dates.

For the September 2026 intake, Hertfordshire linked its Chancellor’s International Scholarship to paying a £5,000 deposit by 30 April 2026. The scholarship is a variable award of £500 to £4,000.

Coventry University’s £2,000 Group Scholarship similarly requires your full CAS deposit to clear by the date in your offer letter. Terms change each year, so check what applies to your intake.

The typical order of events

  1. Apply and receive your offer.
  2. Meet your conditions (academic results, English language, documents).
  3. Pay the deposit shown on your offer letter.
  4. Receive your CAS.
  5. Apply for your Student visa.
  6. Pay the balance of fees as scheduled and travel.

Some universities let you pay after a conditional offer.

Hull, for example, accepts deposits at that stage.

However, it still needs an unconditional offer plus the deposit before progressing a CAS.

It notes that paying early does not move your application up the queue.

Paying before your conditions are met is rarely an advantage on its own.

University by university

University of Hertfordshire

Hertfordshire’s Fees and Finance Policy requires a compulsory minimum deposit from every student who needs visa sponsorship.

Additionally, the UK Universities initial deposit fee is typically £5,000, rising to £10,000 for MBBS and MRes programmes.

The exact figure is stated in your offer.

The deposit is offset against your tuition.

The terms worth knowing:

  • If you fail to register, £2,500 is retained. The full deposit is returned if your visa is refused (with the Home Office refusal evidence), if you fail the academic or financial conditions, or if you cancel within 14 days of accepting.
  • £5,000 is retained if the university reasonably believes fraudulent documents were submitted.
  • A £1,000 Full Payment Discount applies if you pay tuition in full by the stated date: 12 October 2026 for Semester A, 8 February 2027 for Semester B and 24 May 2027 for Semester C.
  • If currency restrictions or banking problems delay your transfer, you can ask the Student Finance Team to defer a payment, with evidence. This is at the university’s discretion.

ULaw (The University of Law)

ULaw asks international students studying full-time on campus to make an International Acceptance Payment of either £4,000 or £8,000, depending on location, when accepting a place. It counts towards your course fees, and your acceptance is only confirmed once payment is received. If you pay it, you don’t also need to make the separate pre-payment that ULaw requires before assessing visa sponsorship. The remaining annual fee is then spread across a maximum of three installments.

ULaw also pushes students towards Flywire for international payments, which supports a wide range of currencies and local payment methods. Note that ULaw’s postgraduate page refers to this payment for study up to June 2026, so confirm the figure for later intakes with the admissions team.

University of Huddersfield

Huddersfield does not publish one fixed figure on its main international pages.

However, the amount you must pay is detailed on your conditional offer letter.

Your CAS is issued once you have met your academic conditions and the advance fee requirement (or supplied an official sponsorship letter).

Additionally, payments go through the university’s Flywire-based portal.

Card payment is recommended because it is the fastest way for the university to update your CAS.

If you are applying through the Study Group route (Huddersfield London or the International Study Centre), the published terms are different: a non-refundable £260 administration fee, a £1,000 security deposit and £8,000 in advance tuition before the CAS, with higher amounts possible for territories considered high risk. Undergraduate terms for Huddersfield London refer to a minimum of 50% of first-year fees in advance instead. Because campuses and routes differ, treat your offer letter as the only reliable number.

Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU)

CCCU doesn’t publish one deposit figure for everyone. Students on a Student Route visa pay a deposit before they start, and the amount is stated in your offer letter. It can vary, and for a course shorter than a year it can be the full tuition fee. The deposit is deducted from the tuition due for that year.

The points worth knowing:

  • You need to accept an unconditional offer and pay the deposit by the deadline in your offer letter before a CAS can be issued.
  • If you are invited to a pre-CAS interview, you must pass it. CCCU says it will not issue a CAS where credibility concerns have been raised.
  • The deposit is refunded only under CCCU’s Deposit Refund Policy, which is linked from your offer letter. Its 2024/25 fee guidance said the deposit was not refundable if you withdrew after accepting your offer and attending the pre-CAS interview, and that it would not be returned where UKVI refuses a visa because of fraud. Check the current version before you pay.
  • The same guidance said that if you defer to the next academic year, your deposit is carried forward rather than returned.

Coventry University

Coventry’s CAS deposit depends on your country. Applicants from the EU and from most of Sub-Saharan and Northern Africa pay £4,000, but Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya are listed separately in the £8,000 group, and applicants from certain countries must pay first-year fees in full. Deposits must be paid before the CAS is released, and the £2,000 Coventry University Group Scholarship is only available if your full CAS deposit clears by the date in your offer letter.

University of Hull and University of Manchester

Hull’s standard deposit is £4,000, but it asks £6,000 from Nigerian applicants and £10,000 from some other countries. The deposit is deducted from tuition, is non-refundable except in specific circumstances, and some applicants are exempt (for example, those with an approved financial sponsor or a full-fee scholarship). Manchester asks international master’s students for a minimum of £2,500, which shows how wide the range can be between universities.

Why your country can change your deposit

If you are applying from Nigeria, one lesson stands out: the deposit depends on where you are applying from, not only on the course. Hull’s Nigerian applicants pay more than its standard rate. Coventry places Nigeria in its £8,000 group. Hertfordshire and Huddersfield both state that higher amounts can apply to applicants from markets they classify as higher risk.

That is why a friend’s deposit amount, or a figure from a random website, may not match yours. The only figure that counts is the one in your own offer letter.

Refunds: read this before you pay

Deposits are refundable in some situations and not in others, and the rules differ. Common patterns include:

  • Visa refusal: often refundable in full or in part, but usually only if you supply the official refusal evidence. To lower that risk, read 7 reasons a UK student visa is refused and how to fix each one.
  • Failing to meet academic or financial conditions: usually refundable.
  • Changing your mind after a CAS is used: often partly or fully non-refundable.
  • Administration fees: frequently non-refundable even when the rest is returned.
  • Cooling-off period: you generally have 14 days from accepting an offer to cancel, but check your terms.

Refunds are typically sent back to the original account and country they came from, so always pay from an account in the applicant’s or sponsor’s own name.

Checklist before you pay

  • Confirm the deposit amount and deadline in your offer letter.
  • Check whether your offer is conditional or unconditional, and whether you can get a CAS yet.
  • Read the refund and cancellation terms in full.
  • Pay only through the official university payment portal or its named payment partner (for example Flywire). Never pay into a personal bank account, and never pay an agent directly in place of the university.
  • Keep proof of payment and your receipt.
  • Allow time for bank transfers, especially if you are sending naira abroad, as processing can take days.
  • Ask whether early payment unlocks any discount or scholarship for your intake.
  • Work backwards from your course start date to make sure you have time for the CAS and visa.

Conclusion

Additionally, pay your deposit once you are certain of your course and your funding.

Moreover, you understand the refund terms, and there is enough time to get your CAS and visa.

Additionally, deadlines, intake capacity and some discounts reward students who move first.
